If you use a computer running Microsoft Windows for your business applications, chances are you are using a standard PC keyboard. This keyboard, whether made by Microsoft or another vendor, contains an 'insert' key that toggles text-editing parameters in certain text and word processors. When using 'Insert' mode, you can type text in between already-typed text. This contrasts with 'Overwrite' mode, which deletes text following the mouse cursor and replaces it with newly typed text. Using the Insert key moves you back and forth between these two modes of editing.

Look towards the bottom of the Word window. Notice the letters 'OVR.' If they are greyed out, then Word is in 'Insert' mode, meaning that if you click your mouse in a previously typed sentence and beginning typing, the new letters will insert themselves between the old ones without changing them.

Switch to overwrite mode by pressing the 'Insert' key. The letters 'OVR' should turn black. Word is now in overwrite mode, meaning that if you try to insert words in previously written sentences, you will overwrite the text that is already there.

Press 'Insert' again. The 'OVR' lettering will grey out again. Word is now back in Insert mode.

Tip

• This procedure is similar in other word-processing programs, though the letters 'OVR' may be replaced by 'OVER' and 'INSERT.'
